A tsunami is a large wave caused by sudden movement in water, often the result of an earthquake, volcanic eruption, or landslide at sea. Some of the largest tsunamis in history have resulted in huge losses, both in terms of lives and the economy. The strongest tsunami ever recorded occurred on December 26, 2004, in the Indian Ocean. An earthquake measuring 9.1 to 9.3 on the Richter scale rocked off the coast of Sumatra, Indonesia, and triggered a tsunami that hit countries such as Thailand, India, Sri Lanka and the Maldives. It is estimated that more than 230,000 people lost their lives in this disaster, making it one of the deadliest in human history. Furthermore, the tsunami that occurred in 2011 in Japan, due to an earthquake measuring 9.0 on the Richter scale, is one of the most famous. The tsunami destroyed entire areas of TÅhoku and caused severe damage to the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. The total death toll exceeded 18,000 people, and the environmental impacts are still felt today. Another tsunami that was no less significant was the one that occurred in 1958 in Lituya Bay, Alaska. The earthquake produced a giant wave as high as 524 meters, which is the highest wave ever recorded. Even though the number of fatalities is small, this phenomenon shows the extraordinary power of nature. The tsunami story also includes the events at Krakatoa in 1883. This volcanic eruption triggered a tsunami that killed more than 36,000 people in the surrounding areas, especially on the islands of Java and Sumatra. Tsunami waves pounding the coast created serious damage to infrastructure and changed the coastline dramatically. Among the lesser known, but dangerous, tsunamis occurred in Chile in 1960 after the largest earthquake ever recorded, measuring 9.5 on the Richter scale. This tsunami impacted not only Chile, but also hit Hawaii, Japan, and the Philippines, causing widespread damage. Tsunamis can also occur due to human activity, as happened in Tasikmalaya, West Java, when a landslide occurred which triggered large waves in 2021. Although not as big as a tsunami caused by an earthquake, this incident reminds us of the potential danger that can arise at any time. The development of tsunami monitoring technology is now increasingly sophisticated, with early warning systems capable of providing quick information to residents in vulnerable areas. However, public awareness and education remain important to minimize the impact of tsunamis in the future. From all tsunami records, one thing is clear: the forces of nature cannot be ignored. Learning from history and strengthening disaster mitigation systems is key in dealing with tsunamis that may occur in the future.
