After a long wait, the Washington Nationals won their first World Series title in franchise history after defeating the Houston Astros in seven games. It was the first time that a game of the World Series ended in an extra inning, making it one of the most dramatic World Series of all time. Corey Seager was named the World Series MVP for the second time, sharing the honor with Reggie Jackson. He also became the first player in MLB history to win the award with two different teams (the other was with the Los Angeles Dodgers).
Freddie Freeman crushed a walk-off grand slam in the 10th inning of Game 1 at Chavez Ravine to nearly the same spot where Kirk Gibson hit his famous home run in 1988, giving the Los Angeles Dodgers a 6-3 victory in an epic Game 1. It was the first time that the World Series was won by a walk-off home run since the Toronto Blue Jays’ Joe Carter did it in the ninth inning of Game 6 of the 1992 World Series against the New York Yankees.
Jazz Chisholm pushed the Yankees back into the lead in the top of the ninth inning with a two-run single against Los Angeles Dodgers closer Blake Treinen, but it was far from over. Shohei Ohtani walked with one out and stole second base, and after Giancarlo Stanton’s RBI groundout, the game appeared to be headed for extra innings. But with the bases loaded, a wild pitch from Treinen caromed off second baseman Gleyber Torres and into the middle of the infield, and Ohtani scored to tie the game.
